Winters Performance Products was started by Vaughn Winter, Sr., and his wife Madeline in 1958 as Winters Transmissions. Family lore actually says the business startes as early as 1953 when Vaughn was in the Air Force, stationed in Wyoming. Much to Madeline's resentment, but with her unfailing support, Vaughn borrowed $100 and began doing performance work to transmissions on the kitchen table of their basement apartment. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, the couple moved back to their hometown of York, Pennsylvania, where Vaughn continued to work with converters and performance racing parts for transmissions and drivelines. Soon after, Wintered developed there aluminum, closed tube, quick change rear, which was patterned after Ford truck rear ends of the late 1930s.
